simple blessings & the gift of song...

we sing a lot in our home...

growing up, my mother's singing was a constant back drop to our lives, so it was quite natural that i, too, sing throughout our days. it keeps me at peace & centered...it helps me be patient when the children are running amok. it calms & sometimes even distracts them when they are tired/hungry...

the boys have now inherited this gift of song, it is contagious! i have even caught their papa making up little songs & jingles...i love it! i love listening to their sweet voices...it brightens my day, definitely.

the other night, we chose to read our bedtime story outside on the front porch & enjoy a gently thunderstorm. ehren, our 3 year old, made up this sweet song that night, which we now sing each might before bed...

"rain, thunder & sun
it is dark, it is dark
in the day the sun will light"

it is such a sweet verse...full of a gentle love & reverence for mother nature. i love it...

the simple woman's daybook

this is a new discovery for me, & i must thank elizabeth over at heartfelt homemaking for introducing me to this wonderful addition to my weekly routine.

i love how the universe brings us what we need, just when we need it...

the simple woman's daybook

FOR TODAY~June 09, 2010
Outside my window...it is dark, the fireflies are flashing in the the night. the chickens are in their coop, the children are in their beds, and i am reliving the wonder that was today. my world is at peace.

I am thinking...of all that i have to be thankful for, reminding myself to stay true to my life, my own path. despite what plans the rest of the world may have, only my heart know the direction for me to take.

I am thankful for...the amazing community of online mamas who provide unyielding support & inspiration for every aspect of my life!
From the learning rooms...we have finished our lessons & cleaned our chalkboards, but our daily rhythm continues...today was "project day" and we finished up an amazing tree fort/bunker designed by our 7 year old son. :)
From the kitchen...i have recently discovered nourishing traditions, by sally fallon & look forward to making more of our own foods & "living simply so that others may simply live" (gandhi).
I am wearing...a thrifted white camisole/tank & a pair of midnight blue linen capris passed onto me from another mamas.
I am creating...balancing butterflies & knit pokemon card cases...party favors for our son's 10th birthday party.
I am going...to be mindful & take each day, each moment at a time...make small changes, and resist my seemingly ingrained from birth urges to overhaul. i will work harder to respect my family & each of its members, appreciating that we each have our own amazing gifts to offer.
I am reading...nourishing traditions (sally fallon), re-reading you are your child's first teacher (rahima baldwin dancy)
I am hoping...that each day will go as beautifully as today!
I am hearing...the sound of silence after a long & busy, but perfect day! :)
Around the house...there are a boxes of toy & shelves of books, pictures on the wall, crumbs on the floor, dishes in the sink, clothes to mend, & laundry baskets that call to me...all constant reminders of the 5 most important people in my life.
One of my favorite things...is knitting for those i love! this week pokemon card holders, but my ravelry queue holds pages upon pages of treasures for the many loves in my life.
A few plans for the rest of the week: gardening, a picnic & play date with friends tomorrow, chess club on friday, baking on saturday...
Here is picture for thought I am sharing...
love for a toad & all of god's creatures great & small...

good night.

raw barley cereal...

my friend jayna has a lovely quote as her email signature...
"live simply that others may simply live" (gandhi)

i am always pondering how we, as a family, can take this more to heart...lately, my musings have involved our food consumption.

we eat pretty healthy, but i am wanting to take that a bit further, and eat more simply. i feel that we spend too much on groceries & that i spend too much time *each day* in the kitchen.

my theory is that we can all eat healthy, but without it costing us a fortune. a bit more time & prep, maybe... earlier generations lived better than we do on much less & they were also much healthier. today most of us rely too heavily on convenience foods & prepackaged products & we definitely pay for those amenities.

i want to be more on my own, living out of the pantry & cooking from scratch with basic ingredients versus the latest cookbooks & magazines loaded with new, trendy ingredients. (not that i am against trying new things)

my plan is to trade out just 1 or 2 recipes a week & slowly make my way through a few new cookbooks, my favorite of which is "nourishing traditions", by sally fallon. it is so much more that a cookbook...she has amazing articles & the hows & whys behind her methods. and the best part if that these are not new methods...she is reviving the old ones, but with their traditions as well. not just our great, great, great grandmothers' bread recipe, but the fact that she soaked her grains as well.

the other cookbooks i ordered are the waldorf kindergarten snack book & the waldorf books of soups (well, the last one i am actually borrowing from a friend).

at any rate, today is grocery day & so i had to rummage. i remembered a recipe for a raw barley cereal, though i couldn't think of where i read it & i couldn't find it on the internet either. so, i just sort of winged it with what we had *in the pantry*! :)

the recipe...

*1 cup barley
*1/4 c slivered almonds (all that we had in the cupboard)
*1/4 c or so sunflower seeds (we actually used sesame seeds as that is all i had on hand)
*2c frozen berries, thawed (ours was a medley of strawberries, blueberries & blackberries)
*sweetener (maple syrup,cane sugar,honey)

*milk of some sort (raw, soy, rice, almond)

combine the first 3 ingredients in a medium bowl, and cover with water. soak overnight.

in the morning, drain off the liquid & stir in the berries & some maple syrup/cane sugar to sweeten. we had to add a bit extra as i was using frozen berries.

scoop in to individual mugs/bowls & pour a little milk over top. enjoy!

the verdict?? 3 our of 5 liked-loved it! :)
for next time i would use a bit less barley. i would use fresh, not frozen, berries & i would also add more of both the nuts & seeds. but as i was rummaging, i used what i had on hand & it turned out well enough.

(now for the behind the scenes...)
i have two rules when it comes to food...
1) everyone can pick *one* thing to "not like"
our 3 oldest, our boys have chosen mushrooms. which is funny b/c lance & i LOVE mushrooms!
i still make whatever i am going to make anyway, but they are allowed to pick out the mushrooms, so long as they don't complain/make a scene about it. if they complain/make a scene, they have to eat them! ;)
2) "we are thankful for the food on our plates"...
someone has worked hard to grow & nurture our foods. and i have worked to search out recipes, to shop for their ingredients, to wash, chop, stew, steam, bake and/or whatever else was required to prep every meals dish. i think that the least we, as a family, can do is be thankful for the time & energy & resources that went into making each & every meal.
what this also means is that if i try out a new dish, we will all eat it this first go round & vote on whether or not it will become part of our menu rotation or not (if the verdict is split, i will usually store it to try again in 6 months or so).
they can say that they would rather i not make it again, but they cannot say the "this is gross" sort of stuff.
for this one, i said that we are definitely keeping it. it is very healthy, fits with our "live simply" philosophy & barley is tuesday's "grain of the day" in the waldorf tradition. which, if you have ever looked, there aren't a million barley recipes to choose from.
i really liked it, as did ehren...evyn shared mine & wanted more, so she shared ehren's as well. we took ours outside on the deck & ate while we watched the chickens scratch around for their breakfasts.
after breakfast, i took suggestions on how to improve (as orin & aydin gave it a thumbs down)...

orin, "cook the barley." (well, then it wouldn't be *raw* would it?)
aydin, "no barley" gotta love kid honesty.

project day...a tree fort!

if you have been following our blog for any amount of time, you know that aydin is our resident creator/constructor/builder/architect and/or whatever other name you can come up for it. his favorite medium is by far legos, but he does love building forts of all types, shapes & sizes....both inside & out. the mastermind...

i cannot count the times i have walked into the living room only to discover every pillow/cushion in the house has migrated into a corner with play silks & building cloths draped over for a roof & doors, etc. he even builds forts for bebe...which she, being only 14 month, tends to dismantle in 1/4 the time it took him to construct it. but...he is patient, for the most part, and rebuilds...

yesterday he called us all outside to see his latest creations...a tree fort. he did a good job, really...how he got a pallet up in the pine tree (a good 6' off the ground) by himself...i have no idea.

at any rate, he had both a platform & the supports...it was relatively well constructed. however, being the mother of 4 children i have learned a few things along the way...so, today we spent out "project day" hour upping the safety of his design.
"in progress"
worker bees...orin...
and ehren...
we dug holes for the support beams, added screws & roofing nails...we added a few more beams & replaced the tin roofing with some scrap plywood. everyone helped with the digging, sawing, hammering, etc...even ehren. it was truly a group effort.

poo on me for not getting "before" pictures...aydin & orin did take a few "in progress", but they don't really show the "big picture".
they boys also walled in the lower lever with the tin roofing, for a bunker.

the end result?? a super cool tree fort/bunker, that mom has no issue with. :)

chickens...

these photos of our sweet baby chicks were taken on may 2nd...enjoy!

(i also threw in a few random shots for good measure...:)
this was taken when we first started letting them out into the tractor part-time (out in the day & into the brooder again at night)
our friend randy & our sweet chicks...

i am the egg, er...bird man...

the lot of them...6 ameraucanas & 5 speckled sussex...

our sweet ehren...binoculars work much better with dandelions atop them!

a pair of felted shoes that our firend jenny gave us when ehren was just baby...his FAVORITE shoes EVER! though we finally had to retire them...too small, but he would insist on wearing them anyway.
after sweing up *new* holes weekly, i finally had to just pack them away. perhaps i can mend them well enough for bebe to wear them...

simply gorgeous...

the nature center...

i am a bit behind on my posting...but such is life during spring/garden season, right??

during orin's, grade 4 "local geography" block, we packed in loads of field trips. one of which was the wnc (western north carolina) nature center.

the nature center is wonderful chance for children, of all ages, to get an up close look at the vast number of birds, mammals, reptiles, etc who live in our region. most, if not all, of the animals have been rescued after being injured in the wild.

we used to go each march for aydin's birthday, but go various time throughout the year as well. each time we go it is different...and as nature & animal lovers, this is one place that will never get old!

the weather was gorgeous, the animals were very much out & about, and we all got loads of exercise hiking up & down the various paths...
ahhh...the pround peacock...
i love this!
a sweet burro...
a visit to the 'petting zoo'...
i have a soft spot in my heart for the fiber-licious lot...;)
awww...sweet goats!
a really creepy stuffed turkey...

black bear, a bit camera shy...

white tailed deer...
carolina fringe tree...

our all-time favorite, the ever entertaining river otter...this one's name is obi wan (no, really!)

oodles of turtles...

red wolf...

we happened upon this barred owl near the end of our trip, he was out on his daily walk. he cannot be released back into the wild because he is missing nearly his entire left wing (he was hit by a car :(

rattlers...
very cool...
you know why i had to add the one, right?? ;)
